LA COULEUR DES AUBERGINES
A few days ago, I needed to find a sofa color for a special client of mine. As I am very familiar with her house and her taste and her slowly evolving style- relatively classic to much more modern- we both thought bronze was a serious contender as well as deep gray. The material was in any case to be velvet, good quality cotton velvet. Velvet does do so well in dark tones.
And then it hit us when we saw an eggplant velvet. Yes! that's it!
My front door is aubergine, so is my client's favorite bag, so, of course we were going to come around to aubergine...no doubt.

This is what her sofa will look like. Naturally, her house is not a chalet like this one, but the colors in the room are greige with some warm wood and 1920's armchairs in taupe mohair velvet and an olivy beige rug. Warm colored neutrals. Perfect. Done. Well, decided anyway.
The whole process made me think about the color eggplant: it is decidedly refined, softer than navy blue and even brown, yet somewhat in the same extended family, and in fact it's EVERYWHERE!

Inevitably aubergine has taken over entire rooms with it's varying shades and depth, from medium to dark from rosy to blueish purple.
(the colors below are suggestions and may not be the actual paint colors used)
medium
Benjamin Moore Fire and Ice #1392
Deep
Benjamin Moore Grappa # 1393
rosy
Benjamin Moore Plum Perfect #1371
purple
Wickes Aubergine
brownish
Resene Aubergine
blueish
Benjamin Moore French Violet #1427
And why not paint the ceiling a soft shade of eggplant?
It can be found in the bathroom, a very dark masculin shade of brownish purple
and in the kitchen...
A perfect color with grays means aubergine is a perfect color with steel

If you are wild about the hue you can choose it for anything else you might dream of. The high end car industry seems happy to oblige.

Ummm what wall could I paint?...wow those are inspiring images!
ReplyDeleteI loved these photos. What rich colours! It makes the dainty Blue/Grey I'm about to paint my bedroom painfully colourless. I am changing it from a deep, heritage rose colour after adding a timber floor instead of carpet.
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading my story on my flashquake blog. Your comment was most kind.
Au revoir!
Denise..:)
What a fabulous color! I've never been a fan of purple, I usually find it a little off putting, but I adore aubergine. Come to think of it, it reminds me of several chic Parisian interiors. It's such a warm sexy color. I love the aubergine velvet couch against the creamy neutral palette
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite colors depuis toujours!
ReplyDeleteEggplant is a fabulous color, I love to wear it and I like it on furniture, don't think I could live in a room that dark. Great post, stay warm and happy. yvonne
ReplyDeleteAubergine is so beautiful against gray, it actually goes with so many colors. It also hides a lot of dirt but not dog hair...ugh!
ReplyDeleteI adore aubergine! Love the couches as an accent in that first room and that full wall surprised me. I really liked it!
ReplyDeleteIt's just one of my FAVORITE COLOR ! Calm, elegant, also contemporary, and - for me - timeless.
ReplyDeleteWonderful images! Merci beaucoup

I love aubergine...I think it's a chic color.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
It really is a wonderful colour. I love these images and paint samples. The Benjamin Moore Grappa and Farrow and Ball Binjal are fabulous. My bedroom is painted in dark red which has a hint of aubergine - it's Dragon's Blood Red by Fired Earth, I think they've changed it since I had the room painted. Lovely to have found your blog via TNMA xx
ReplyDeleteCouleurs que j'adore et qui sont très subtiles...
