LE RETOUR DES CAFTANS
Those of us who were not in kindergarten in the 70's, remember the kaftan craze. The first piece of clothing I ever designed that was actually advertised and sold, was a kaftan. I loved them then and I love them still.
Back then, they were very "a thousand and one nights", all glitter and brocade.
The new versions are mostly very dressy but a bit more fluid
You can find kaftans with politico-fashion statements to make
some are short and beachy.
During my latest stays in Morocco I had a few kaftans made from fabrics I brought from here. This one was borrowed by my daughter Lys-Aelia and the way she styled it is very different from what I do: sleeves down, no belt and, of course, NOT on white shorts! But it goes to show that kaftans are the tops that span all generations and looks.
On my next trip to Morocco in July, I will have an ankle length kaftan made with 3 different cotton fabrics: a mini geometric print for the body, a man's shirt stripe to line the bottom of the sleeves and a small flowery print lining the neck line, all in 3 different shades of green. At the neck I will have some Moroccan buttons sewn along the front slit.
Kaftans make such a great house dress for casual entertaining (or for a dressy evening if you are lucky enough to own the gold and blue one by Reem Acra, above) and in the morning it's so much more elegant than a robe.
Can't wait!

au revoir.
I love a kaftan, I bought a green velvet one with gold braid once from Oxfam. I loved it, I actually had it fitted to my body a little more and it looked fabulous. I have the beach one in your photo and I love the sound of the one you are having made.
ReplyDeleteI really like your blog, I loved the black decor post

Oh my goodness, I had the first one when I was pregnant (a hundred years ago!)!! I just flipped over from James, where I really enjoyed your comment as I do get heartily sick of only flowery comments! Have thoroughly enjoyed your blog and will be back.
ReplyDeleteThe sleeves and the neck lines are not the only changes that the outfit have gone through. The whole lenght of the dress also has its variations. Kaftans no longer have to be ankle length.Beachwear
ReplyDeleteSo many..many absolutely gorgeous kaftans. The gold one is incredible. I'm embarrassed to say I have never owned one, but I certainly need to remedy that. Thank you for the marvelous inspiration Jeanne. Wishing you a lovely weekend.
